A suspected DUI driver overnight drove their Toyota Tacoma into the scene of an earlier DUI crash on Interstate 76 and hit two Commerce City police officers and two South Adams County Fire Department firefighters.
The officers and one firefighter sustained minor injuries, but the other firefighter was seriously injured, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.
“Fortunately both of our officers are expected to be okay,” Commerce City police said in a post on X.
South Adams Fire said on X the seriously injured firefighter will undergo surgery Friday morning.
Commerce City Police and South Adams County Fire responded to the first crash on Interstate 76 westbound between the Sable Boulevard exit and U.S. 85 junction about 9:10 p.m. Thursday.
A fire truck was blocking two lanes of the interstate, allowing traffic to pass on the right shoulder. The four first responders were on the road near a police patrol car parked on the road, according to CSP.
The driver of the Tacoma was traveling in the left lane and drove on the left shoulder around the fire truck before entering the roadway and hitting the four first responders, according to CSP.
The allegedly impaired driver drove through police barricades, Commerce City police said on X.
CSP said the driver was being investigated for driving under the influence and was booked into the Adams County jail on charges.
